Staining

Staining can be found either within the tooth or on the surface. Staining within the teeth is caused by ageing or certain drugs taken when the teeth were forming. Staining on the surface of the teeth is very common, and is generally caused by tea, coffee, port, red wine or smoking, and food items such as curry. Tooth staining can be unsightly and damaging to your confidence. Some dental mouthwashes can also cause staining if used long term – just ask your dentist or hygienist for advice.

How can tooth staining be treated?

Internal tooth staining can only be treated by whitening procedures. External staining is generally easy and painless to remove, using the special instruments available to the hygienist.
